People & Talent Leadership (Higher Education Short Course)

Strong leadership and effective people management are at the heart of every successful organisation. This higher education short course is designed to introduce you to the key principles of leadership, with a particular focus on human resource management—helping you build the confidence and knowledge to support and lead others.  A Course Designed for You: whether you have a background in business, engineering, digital technologies, or are simply interested in developing your leadership skills, this course provides an accessible starting point. It’s also ideal for mature learners looking to progress in their careers or return to education after time away.

If you feel unsure about studying again, you’re not alone—this course is designed to be supportive, flexible and easy to engage with, helping you rebuild confidence as you learn.  This course forms part of the Higher Technical Qualification so you can be assured that the knowledge and skills you will gain are aligned to current industry needs.  It also meets the Occupational Manager occupational standard.

This course starts by looking at different human resource management approaches. You will learn about  

  • The impact of the role of HRM in creating sustainable organisational performance and contributing to business success  
  • Workforce action plans for recruiting and retaining talent to address skills shortages in an organisation  
  • How external and internal factors can affect HRM decision-making in relation to organisational development  
  • HRM practices in a work-related context for improving sustainable organisational performance. 

You will also gain insight into leadership styles and their application in contemporary organisations, including: 

  • How leadership and management theories and principles impact the effectiveness of an organisation  
  • The influence of different leadership and management styles on the culture of organisations  
  • Motivational strategies to optimise organisational performance  
  • Leadership and management approaches to managing performance to ensure continuous improvement.

Transferable skills are those such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are highly valued in higher education and in the workplace. By the end of the course, you will have sound knowledge of the basic concepts of leadership and the management of human resources ie an organisation’s people.
