The HNC to HND Conversion in Digital Technologies (Cyber Security) (HTQ) (Online) builds on foundational knowledge gained at Level 4 and develops specialist expertise in cyber security principles, practices and technologies. Students explore areas such as security operations, incident response, secure network design and digital risk management.
The programme focuses on both theoretical understanding and practical application, enabling learners to develop industry-relevant skills through hands-on activities, labs and scenario-based learning. Students will enhance their problem-solving, analytical and decision-making abilities while gaining experience with contemporary cyber security tools and approaches.
The course is aligned with employer needs and supports progression into a variety of cyber security roles. Students will also develop transferable skills such as teamwork, communication and project management, which are essential for success in the digital sector.
Unit 22: Security Operations (15 Credits)
This unit explores the operation of security systems within organisations. Students examine monitoring tools, incident detection and response processes, and how security operations centres (SOCs) function to protect systems and data.
Unit 19: Data Structures & Algorithms (15 Credits)
Students develop knowledge of data organisation and algorithm design, focusing on efficiency and performance in digital systems. This supports problem-solving in the development of secure and scalable systems.
Unit 20: Applied Programming and Design Principles (15 Credits)
This unit develops advanced programming skills and an understanding of secure coding practices. Students learn how to design robust, maintainable applications with embedded security considerations.
Unit 21: Network Security (15 Credits)
Students investigate network vulnerabilities, attack methods and protection strategies. The unit focuses on designing, implementing and managing secure network infrastructures.
Unit 41: Cloud Computing (15 Credits)
This unit explores cloud architecture, deployment models and security considerations in cloud environments. Students learn how to manage and secure cloud-based systems.
Unit 23: Cryptography (15 Credits)
Students examine encryption techniques, cryptographic protocols and their application in securing communications and data. The unit builds a foundation in protecting digital information.
Unit 31: Systems Architecture (15 Credits)
This unit introduces students to the design and structure of complex digital systems. Learners explore how hardware and software components interact, focusing on performance, scalability and security considerations in modern computing environments.
Unit 32: Business Intelligence (15 Credits)
Students develop an understanding of how data can be transformed into meaningful insights for decision-making. The unit covers data analysis, visualisation tools and reporting techniques to support organisational performance and strategic planning.
This course is delivered online and will consist of weekly ‘live’ (synchronous) 2-hour workshops and seminars delivered through our Online Learning Platform, along with learning materials which you will be guided through and able to complete at a time convenient to you.
You will learn through research, independent study, directed study and workplace scenarios. By participating in vocational activities, you will develop key behaviours and transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, research, and analysis. Plus, you’ll be taught by a friendly, committed, and qualified team of lecturers who have both professional and teaching experience.
Assessment
There are no exams, as you will be assessed through a mixture of written assignments, and practice-related coursework. You will also be supported with a wide range of learning resources made available via Activate Learning’s Online Learning Environment (ALO), including access to textbooks, articles, and multimedia content. You will have student access through your Activate Learning IT account to appropriate digital applications.
