Financial confidence for aspiring leaders (Higher Education Short Course)

Strong leadership is not just about managing people—it’s also about making informed, confident decisions. This higher education short course introduces you to the key principles of leadership, management and financial decision-making, helping you understand how organisations plan, control and use financial information to succeed.

This course is ideal for students from a wide range of subject areas, including business, engineering, digital technologies, or those with no previous experience in finance or management. It is also well suited to mature learners who are looking to progress their careers, move into leadership roles, or explore a new area of interest.

If you are returning to study after some time away, you may feel unsure—but this course is designed to be accessible, supportive and confidence-building, helping you ease back into learning.

This course forms part of the Higher Technical Qualification so you can be assured that the knowledge and skills you will gain are aligned to current industry needs.  It also meets the Occupational Manager occupational standard.

This course starts by looking at the contemporary organisations. You will learn about  

  • The different types, sizes and scope of organisations  
  • The interrelationship of the various functions in an organisation and how they link to organisational structure  
  • The positive and negative influence/impact the macroenvironment has on business operations  
  • The internal strengths and weaknesses of a specific business and their interrelationship with external macro factors.

You will also gain insight into financial decision making, including: 

  • The context and purpose of accounting  
  • How to prepare basic financial statements for unincorporated and small business organisations in accordance with accounting principles, conventions and standards 
  • How to interpret financial statements  
  • How to prepare budgets for planning, control and decision-making using spreadsheets.

Transferable skills are those such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are highly valued in higher education and in the workplace. By the end of the course, you will have sound knowledge of the basic concepts of financial management and decision making.
