This course is made up of two units:

Financial Management & Business Practices in Construction (15 credits)

You will be introduced through this unit to the concepts of business management and financial control. You will examine a range of factors that influence the ways in which companies grow, raise finance and control their costs and resources. Topics included are the legal status of building companies and how it impacts on raising finance; the different sources of finance and how a company manages them; contemporary management strategies; how the day-to-day management of the different resources used by a construction company have an impact on their success. On successful completion you will be able to analyse the legal status of different types of construction companies, their business strategies and how they raise and manage their finances, and the management of the resources available to them.

Tender & Procurement (15 credits)

The aim of this part of the course is to give you the knowledge you need to be able to select a procurement route and an appropriate tendering method in the awarding of a project to a main contractor. You will learn how to prepare a tender package in procuring a contractor for a client’s work. Topics included are tendering constraints and information; the documentation needed to send out a tender; the factors that affect procurement; the procurement methods that can be used to select a contractor. On successful completion you will be able to prepare tender documents for a client’s project, at the design stage, using a suitable procurement method. You will also have the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to progress to a higher level of study.

This course is delivered online and will consist of weekly ‘live’ (synchronous) 2-hour workshops and seminars delivered through our Online Learning Platform along with learning materials which you will be guided through and able to complete at a time convenient to you.

You will learn through research, independent study, directed study and workplace scenarios. By participating in vocational activities, you will develop key behaviours and transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, research, and analysis. Plus, you’ll be taught by a friendly, committed, and qualified team of lecturers who have both professional and teaching experience.

Assessment

There are no exams as you will be assessed through a mixture of written assignments, and practice-related coursework. You will also be supported with a wide range of learning resources made available via Activate Learning’s Online Learning Environment (ALO), including access to textbooks, articles, and multimedia content. You will have student access through your Activate Learning IT account to the appropriate digital applications

Normally, entry requires a minimum of 48 UCAS points from your Level 3 qualifications comprised of either:

a BTEC Level 3 qualification such as an Extended Diploma in Construction or other relevant subject.

a GCE A Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject, or satisfactory performance across more than one A Level.

other related Level 3 qualification.

an Access to Higher Education Diploma in a relevant subject.

a T Level in a related subject, at Pass or above, or

an international equivalent to the above qualifications.

In addition, you should have one of the following:

GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above.

Equivalent qualifications, such as Functional Skills Level 2, may also be accepted

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you do not meet the formal entry requirements above but have relevant work experience, training, or alternative qualifications, you may still be eligible to apply through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.

This process allows us to recognise the learning you have gained through professional practice, previous study, or other experiences when we assess your RPL application.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be perfectly positioned to further your learning by moving on to study either another short course or the full Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction Management for England or the HNC in Architectural Technology for England qualifications

On successful completion, you will receive a Certificate of Unit Completion awarded by Pearson

Tuition fees are published for the first year of entry only and may increase in subsequent years both for new and continuing students in line with an inflationary amount determined by the Office for Students.
