This 19-week short course is designed to introduce you to the commercial and organisational side of construction, helping you build the knowledge needed to take your next step.

Whether you are starting fresh, changing direction, or returning to education, the course provides a practical and supportive introduction to key elements of the construction industry.

This course forms part of the Higher Technical Qualification so you can be assured that the knowledge and skills you will gain are aligned to current industry needs.  It also meets the Construction Design and Build Technician occupational standard.

This course starts by looking at the contemporary construction environment enabling you to gain a strong foundation in construction technology and industry practice. You will: 

  • Understand key construction terminology and how it is used in practice 
  • Learn how substructures and superstructures are designed and built 
  • Explore how construction projects respond to different site conditions 
  • Understand how building services such as water, power and heating are integrated 

You will also develop an awareness of the wider industry, including: 

  • The roles of professionals and how they work together 
  • The economic and social impact of construction 
  • How quality, safety and timely delivery are managed 
  • The career pathways and progression opportunities available… enabling you to develop a solid understanding of the construction upon which you can build your future career and/or further study. 

Transferable skills, such as communication, teamwork, research, and analysis, are highly valued in higher education and the workplace. By the end of the course, you will have sound knowledge of the basic concepts of construction. You will be competent in a range of subject-specific skills as well as in general skills and qualities relevant to key areas of construction.
