Colleges’ Week 2026

For Colleges Week 2026, we’re celebrating the power of college-based Higher Education to open doors, unlock potential and create life-changing opportunities for our students. From career-focused qualifications to real-world experience, discover how studying at college can be the first step towards a bright and successful future.

Why choose higher education?

College-based Higher Education offers a high-quality alternative to the traditional university route, delivering Level 4–6 qualifications that combine academic rigour with practical, employer-informed learning.

With smaller class sizes, personalised support and flexible study options, learners can progress at a pace that suits their career goals – often at a lower cost – while achieving strong outcomes in employment and further study.

Activate Learning’s Higher Education courses focus on the skills that matter most to employers and local communities. Designed around real-world careers and aligned with Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) priorities, our degrees and higher-level programmes help learners develop the expertise businesses are seeking across Surrey, Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

Higher Education designed around local labour market needs

Our Higher Education offering equips learners with the technical and professional skills that employers have identified as critical for growth and productivity. The Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) emphasises the need for responsive, inclusive curricula and stronger employer-provider collaboration — and that’s exactly what Activate Learning delivers. Each course is validated in partnership with universities, ensuring the skills you gain are both employer-relevant and nationally recognised.

HTQs

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are employer-approved Level 4 and 5 qualifications designed to deliver the technical skills needed in key industries. Developed in collaboration with employers, HTQs focus on practical, job-ready learning and clear routes into skilled employment or progression to higher study. Compared with standard degree programmes, they are typically shorter, more flexible and more cost-effective, making them a strong option for meeting workforce demand and supporting economic growth. Equipping learners for roles that employers need

Local employers consistently tell skills providers they need graduates with strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, digital capability and professional competencies. The LSIP highlights the importance of developing curricula that respond directly to these needs and build strong links between training and local jobs.

At Activate Learning, undergraduate students gain:

  • Industry-related technical skills
  • Cross-cutting skills like communication, teamwork and project management
  • Workforce readiness experience through real application in workplace learning settings, workplace insight and thorough sector awareness

This combination prepares students not just to graduate — but to thrive in the labour market employers are shaping right now.

Molly Walford

Merrist Wood College Alumni

How would you describe your overall experience on the Animal Welfare and Behaviour Higher Education programme at Merrist Wood?

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Merrist Wood. The combination of practical facilities, engaging lectures and real industry insight helped shape me into a confident, work-ready professional. Every lecturer brought valuable first-hand experience from sectors such as conservation, zoos, equine and agriculture, making the learning relevant and directly connected to the animal industry.

What were the most valuable skills, knowledge or experiences you gained from the course?

The support I received during my dissertation was invaluable. My tutor encouraged me to pursue ambitious research, which led to me presenting at a conference and winning first place. The experience significantly boosted my confidence and strengthened my research and analytical skills.

How did the programme influence or shape your career aspirations?

The course helped me discover my passion for animal welfare and enrichment. I focused my dissertation on calf enrichment and found great satisfaction in researching behavioural needs and seeing animals benefit from enrichment I had created. This shaped my career direction and confirmed what I wanted to pursue.

What are you doing now, and how has the course helped you in your current role or next steps?

After completing the course, I secured a role as a seasonal zoo keeper and have since been offered a fixed-term contract. The knowledge I gained at Merrist Wood — particularly in welfare, ethics and enrichment — supports me in my role every day. I now build enrichment for the animals I work with and truly love my job.
